Metrics for Async Coaching: What to Actually Measure

Engagement vanity metrics hide the truth. The numbers that matter in async coaching are completion, activation, retention, and outcomes. What each one tells you and how to use it.

You cannot improve what you do not measure, but measuring the wrong thing is worse than not measuring at all. In async coaching, the temptation is to track activity, logins, messages, minutes. Those feel reassuring and predict almost nothing. Four metrics actually matter.

Activation

Did the client start and complete the very first step? Activation is the earliest predictor of everything downstream. A strong first check-in and session is what gets someone activated; if they never take step one, nothing else happens.

Completion

The headline metric. Did they finish the program? Completion is trust and revenue at once, and most online programs are terrible at it, which is exactly the problem async coaching exists to solve. Track it as a percentage and watch where in the journey people drop.

Retention

Do clients continue, renew, or come back for the next offer? Retention tells you whether the result was real enough to keep the relationship alive. It is also where your pricing and offer ladder pays off, returning clients are the cheapest growth you have.

Outcomes

The one that justifies everything: did the client get the result they came for? Outcomes are harder to measure, a self-rating, a before/after, a concrete milestone, but they are the truth the other three only approximate. The async programs worth copying lead with outcomes, the way MyInnerCenter and MySleepExpert do.

Ignore the vanity

Logins, messages, and minutes-in-app can all rise while completion and outcomes fall. Measure progress toward the result, not motion around it. If a number does not help you get more clients to finish and succeed, it does not belong on your dashboard, the same discipline behind what async coaching is.

Frequently asked questions

What metrics matter most in async coaching? +

Four: activation (did the client start and complete the first step), completion (did they finish the program), retention (do they continue or come back), and outcomes (did they get the result). These beat vanity engagement numbers like logins or messages sent.

Why is completion the headline metric? +

Because completion is trust and revenue. A client who finishes and gets a result buys again and refers; one who stalls blames themselves and hesitates. Most online programs have very low completion, so improving it is the biggest lever you have.

What is a vanity metric here? +

Anything that looks busy but does not predict results: total logins, messages exchanged, minutes in-app. They can rise while completion and outcomes fall. Measure progress toward the result, not activity.
